Ben & Jerry’s made a bold new flavor announcement in May 2019: CBD ice cream was coming—as soon as it’s legalized at the federal level.
Two years later, this “groovy” treat still isn’t available to the public because big food companies like Ben and Jerry are waiting for U.S. officials to legalize cannabidiol (CBD) infused foods before they release any cannabis-infused goodies of their own onto an already booming market that topped $1 billion last year alone!
Legalization is the question
It’s been a crazy few years for cannabis legalization. Some states have legalized it and some haven’t, but the Consumer Brands Association is looking to bring lobbying efforts back into its “front burner” in order to create federal legislation that will make life easier for everyone involved with this fast-growing industry – both big companies and small brands alike.
The trade group’s general counsel has noted that while smaller businesses are forging ahead without worry due largely to their more lax regulatory environment, larger industries who may be inclined towards these restrictions remain hesitant as they try figure out what types of products could or couldn’t be allowed when push comes down shove on regulations at large levels like state governments which differ wildly from one another according to current conditions.
